HELENA

Unlike Ann and Joyce (and Edna, who never got further than the odd dance with a passing soldier), Welsh Helena met her future husband in 1938; Percy Jones came from a farming family in Elan Valley, but it was six long years before they eventually married. It wasn’t war that got in the way, rather the needs of her own large family which forced Helena to delay her nuptials. And then delay them again. ‘Well, I suppose Percy did really have the patience of an angel. My sister-in-law told me he worked himself up into quite a stew.’ With a long, kind face and gangling limbs that saw him play badminton for Wales, Percy first met Helena when she came to teach in Elan Valley School. An unassuming man with bright blue eyes, it took Helena a little while to realise that she was falling in love. A nimble athlete in her own right, the two of them played badminton in the school hall. It was good clean fun and appropriately dark by the time they packed up.

We were leaving one night and there was a great big long wall and I’d have walked straight into the wall, but Percy grabbed me. I suppose he put his arm around me really, and he said, ‘Look out! Here, you nearly went into that wall!’ ‘Oh,’ I said. ‘Thank you, my glasses aren’t so good!’ That was the first time we ever made contact, if you know what I mean.
